Texas Motorcycle Insurance
Texas Insurance Requirements and Suggestions*
Texas required insurance for motorcyclists:
Texas does require, under current laws, that you carry insurance on your Texas motorcycle. Texas is NOT a No-Fault state althought they do offer optional PIP (Personal Injury Protection) coverage.
Texas Insurance Requirements:
The Texas Law requires minimum insurance coverage with the liability coverage:
- Bodily Injury Liability (1 Person): $30,000
- Bodily Injury Liability (All Persons, 1 Accident): $60,000
- Property Damage Liability: $25,000
The main point of liability coverage in Texas is to cover expenses that occur after accidents such as:
- ***Medical and funeral costs, lost wages and compensation for pain and suffering***
- Car repair or replacement costs/ reimbursement for other property damage
- Rental car while your vehicle is being repaired
- Any punitive damages awarded by a court
- Attorney fees if someone sues you because of the accident
- Bail, up to $250, if you're arrested
Uninsured Motorist (UM) Coverage
- If you are injured in a motorcycle accident, the negligent person's BI (Bodily Injury) liability coverage should pay your medical bills, lost wage and pain & suffering. Unfortunately, many times the bills exceed their policy, or maybe they just don’t have insurance at all. Protect yourself by having Uninsured Motorist coverage. This optional coverage will protect you and cover the difference in your bills. More often than not, BI policies are not enough to cover you.
- UM includes underinsured motorist (UIM) coverage. In order to have this insurance, your UM has to be at least as much as bodily injury liability coverage purchased (usually $10,000), unless specifically rejected.
- This is NOT required, although we highly recommend it.
*Remember laws/requirements are subject to change and that we are merely suggesting this insurance coverage. We are not insurance agents so speak with your insurance agent to find out what policy will best protect you.
**Technically these do not apply to Texas Motorcyclists so contact your insurance agent to find out what coverage you need.
